on 22 october the government put out its "be ready" advice: every household should be able to get by on its own for three days if something goes wrong. that means bottled water and food that needs no fridge or cooking, plus a torch, a radio, spare batteries, some cash, blankets and copies of important documents. the reasons given: storms, floods, wildfires and hostile states. supermarkets say they can cope as long as nobody panic buys, and the advice is to build it up slowly. several european countries already tell people to do this. sensible planning, or a sign of something worse? and be honest: how many days would your cupboard last right now?
